The extension has been issued in the public interest under Section 334 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, with prior government approval.

Bangladesh’s National Board of Revenue (NBR) announced a further extension for the submission of income tax returns by individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) taxpayers for the 2025–26 tax year on 29 January 2026.

According to the notification, the deadline has been extended until 28 February 2026. As 28 February falls on a Saturday, taxpayers may file their returns without penalty until the next working day, 1 March. This marks the third extension of the deadline.

The NBR attributed the extension to lower-than-expected tax return submissions. Taxpayers who encounter issues with online registration in the e-return system may submit paper returns by 15 February, subject to approval from the relevant Additional or Combined Tax Commissioner.

Under the Income Tax Act, failure to submit returns on time can result in interest at 4% per month on outstanding tax, a penalty of 50% of the previous year’s tax or a minimum of BDT 1,000 and potential loss of investment rebates or exemptions. Returns filed within the extended deadline will be exempt from these penalties.

NBR data shows that while around 45 lakh tax returns were submitted last year, just over 37 lakh returns have been filed so far this year. NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan noted on 25 January that 47 lakh individuals have registered online to submit their returns.

The extension has been issued in the public interest under Section 334 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, with prior government approval.

Earlier, NBR announced a one-month extension for filing income tax returns for the 2025-26 tax year.
