Bangladesh approves 220,000 tons of US wheat to boost trade ties and diversify supplies.

Bangladesh has authorised the purchase of around 220,000 metric tons of wheat from the US under a government-to-government agreement, officials said on 7 October 2025.

The deal, priced at USD 308 per ton, will be fulfilled through Agrocorp International, a Singapore-based trader licensed by US Wheat Associates.

The arrangement follows a July memorandum of understanding for Bangladesh to import 700,000 metric tons of US wheat annually over the next five years, aiming to diversify grain sources and strengthen trade relations with Washington. The move comes amid efforts to ease tensions following US import tariffs imposed during the Trump administration.

Bangladesh, which mainly relies on lower-cost wheat from the Black Sea region, uses US and Canadian wheat for blending and quality improvement. Officials noted the purchase also forms part of a broader strategy to reduce the country’s USD 6 billion trade deficit with the United States and secure more favourable conditions for key exports, particularly ready-made garments.

Earlier, Bangladesh approved the purchase of 220,000 metric tons of wheat from the US for USD 302.75 per ton.
