To simplify Australia’s tax system and boost economic productivity, the government has tasked the Board of Taxation with reviewing ways to cut red tape and reduce compliance burdens for businesses.
Australia’s Treasurer Jim Chalmers announced on 24 September 2025 that the government has taken initiatives to cut the “red tape” in the tax system to ease the compliance burden on businesses and make our economy more productive.
These tasks are also aimed at reducing the regulatory and compliance burden across the economy to support productivity growth.
As part of the review, the Board of Taxation, a non-statutory advisory body, will consult with businesses and the broader community to identify areas of business tax law and administration where there are opportunities for red tape reduction.
The Board’s findings are expected to guide future reforms to make Australia’s tax system more efficient, transparent, and supportive of businesses.
The Board will look for substantial, material and measurable areas of red tape reduction that directly support productivity.
