Bangladesh planned to introduce a national carbon credit framework within a month, alongside a national registry and dedicated approval cell, to attract renewable energy investment and increase carbon credit revenue.

Bangladesh will finalise a national carbon credit framework within a month to facilitate public and private investment in renewable energy and help developers earn revenue from carbon credits, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Saimum Parvez said on Wednesday, 4 November 2026.

Speaking at a seminar at the Bangladesh Solar Expo 2026 in Dhaka, he said the framework would be placed before the Cabinet for approval. The government would also set up a national carbon credit registry and a dedicated cell under the Department of Environment to simplify approvals.

Saimum said Bangladesh earned about USD 6 million from carbon credits last year, against an estimated annual potential of USD 1 billion. Revenue from private-sector projects would largely go to project owners, he added.

The government also plans to convert more than 10 lakh diesel- and electricity-powered irrigation pumps to solar power within 18 months, he said.
