Romania has extended the 25% excise duty reduction on standard diesel for 16–31 October 2026 under its biweekly fuel price review mechanism. The measure keeps the effective excise rate at RON 2,103.22 per 1,000 litres amid rising international and domestic diesel prices.

Romania’s Ministry of Finance announced on 15 October 2026 that it has extended the temporary 25% reduction in excise duty on standard diesel for 16-31 October 2026. This continues support measures introduced under Law no. 162/2026, which established a dynamic reassessment mechanism reviewed every two weeks.

The reduction equals RON 701.07 per 1,000 litres or RON 829.69 per ton. With this cut applied, the effective excise duty rate stands at RON 2,103.22 per 1,000 litres or RON 2,489.05 per ton during this period.

The Ministry analysed international fuel indicators for the October 16-31 assessment window. Platts diesel quotes rose 47.78% over the period.

Domestic pump prices for standard diesel climbed 35.60%. The mechanism triggered the same 25% reduction rate applied in the previous period based on these movements.

The excise cut aims to restrain fuel costs from spreading through transport and logistics sectors. Lower fuel prices reduce transportation expenses, which normally feed into consumer goods costs and broader inflation.

The Ministry plans continued monitoring of international quotations and retail pricing as the mechanism operates on its two-week review cycle.

Earlier, Romania increased the temporary excise duty reduction on standard diesel from 20% to 25% for 1–15 September 2026, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance on 31 August 2026.
