IRS has announced that Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) will be expired, effective from 2016, if the numbers have not been used on a federal income tax return for five consecutive years.
This is revised policy, under the old policy ITINs would have automatically expired after five year, issued after January 1, 2013, even if used properly and regularly by taxpayers, which was announced in November 2012. New policy applies to any ITIN ignoring when it was issued. The IRS will not start deactivating ITINs until 2016 to give time to adjust to all interested parties.
