The adjustment follows Canada’s announcement of levies on approximately USD 20 billion worth of American goods, matching the 50% tariffs the US imposed on Canadian imports on 22 August 2026.
The remaining tariffs are set to take effect on 8 September 2026.
The escalation follows Canada’s suspension of US trade talks on 21 August 2026 over disputed US trade terms. The US then imposed 50% tariffs on about USD 20 billion of Canadian goods, prompting Canadian retaliation, while the Trump administration plans 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, trucks and automotive parts from 1 January 2027.
