Bangladesh’s NBR publishes English version of Income Tax Act 2023 for clearer guidance to taxpayers.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued the Authentic English Text of the Income Tax Act 2023 in the official gazette through SRO No-404-Law/2025 on 16 October 2025.

Announcing the release on Saturday (18 October), NBR said the English version responds to long-standing requests from foreign investors, who previously faced uncertainty over the law’s interpretation and implementation, as only the Bangla version had been available.

The English text presents extensive excerpts from the Income Tax Act, covering the legal framework for taxation, including the repeal and re-enactment of the Income-tax Ordinance of 1984. It details the structure and hierarchy of tax authorities, such as the National Board of Revenue and the Taxes Appellate Tribunal, and sets out methods for calculating different types of income.

The act also defines key terms like “tax,” “assessee,” “business,” and “tax day,” and specifies rules for deductions, allowances, and tax collection at the source for both residents and non-residents. Additional sections cover penalties, provisions for tax avoidance, and schedules detailing taxation of insurance businesses, capital gains, exemptions, and depreciation allowances.

The NBR said the English version will help investors and taxpayers better understand the law and support accurate implementation.
