Belgium’s tax authority announced that the planned VAT system modernisation has been indefinitely postponed, with transitional measures remaining in place to maintain continuity.

Belgium’s tax administration has released Circular 2025/C/62 on 1 October 2025, in which it officially confirmed the indefinite postponement of the planned modernisation of the VAT chain.

This decision also delays key changes such as the introduction of the VAT provision account, the discontinuation of the current account system, and the adoption of a new bank account for VAT payments.

The circular emphasises that this is not merely a temporary delay but a deferral “until further notice.” In the meantime, transitional measures will remain in effect to ensure continuity.

Earlier, Belgium’s Federal Public Service for Finance announced a delay in the implementation of its VAT chain modernisation measures on 26 August 2025. The announced postponement also meant that the new account number may not be used, even after 1 October 2025.

Therefore, businesses should continue using the existing account number, BE22 6792 0030 0047, for periodic VAT return payments until further notice.
