Bahrain and Iceland joined the 1969 Vienna Convention in September 2025.
Bahrain and Iceland have formally joined the 1969 Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties. The countries deposited their instruments of accession on 24 and 25 September 2025, respectively.
The Convention establishes the rules for drafting, interpreting, amending, and terminating treaties, including tax treaties, and codifies customary international law.
It will enter into force for Bahrain on 24 October and for Iceland on 25 October 2025.
Bahrain’s accession was completed at the United Nations headquarters in New York during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. Foreign Minister Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani handed the accession document to Elinor Hammarskjöld, UN Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs.
