India’s Foreign Minister says trade talks with the US are continuing, but New Delhi will defend key “redlines” as additional tariffs of up to 50%.
India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar stated on 23 August 2025 that trade negotiations with the US are ongoing.
However, he said that New Delhi must uphold certain “redlines,” particularly regarding the interests of farmers and small producers.
“We have some redlines in the negotiations, to be maintained and defended,” Jaishankar said.
Indian exports to the US will be subject to extra tariffs reaching up to 50%, one of the highest rates levied by Washington, in response to India’s rising imports of Russian oil. Half of the tariff (25%) is already in force, with the remaining 25% scheduled to take effect on 27 August.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on 6 August 2025, adding an additional 25% tariff on top of the existing 25% tariff on Indian goods.
