The new tariffs will enter into force on 1 August 2025.

The Trump Administration will impose 25% tariffs on Indian imports, citing India’s high tariffs, trade barriers and ongoing defence and energy ties with Russia. US President Donald Trump also warned of additional unspecified penalties.

“While India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high,” Trump wrote in the Truth Social post. “They have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia’s largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE — ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!”

The move is part of the broader “Liberation Day” trade overhaul launched on 2 April 2025, which includes a 10% general tariff and higher rates for countries with large trade surpluses or unfair practices.

The India announcement was made ahead of a 1 August deadline for countries to finalise reciprocal tariff agreements or face new Trump-imposed tariffs on their exports.

The White House had earlier cautioned India over its elevated average applied tariffs—approximately 39% on agricultural goods—reaching up to 45% for vegetable oils and around 50% for apples and corn.

The new tariffs will take effect on 1 August 2025.
