This follows EU’s warning on 14 July 2025 that it may implement countermeasures if ongoing trade negotiations with the US fail to prevent the imposition of 30% tariffs scheduled to begin on 1 August.

The European Union has decided to halt the retaliatory tariffs on US imports, which were set to begin on 14 July, until 6 August 2025 to finalise a trade agreement with the Trump administration by the end of the month.

This follows the EU’s warning on 14 July 2025 that it may implement countermeasures if ongoing trade negotiations with the US fail to prevent the imposition of 30% tariffs, as threatened by US President Donald Trump, scheduled to begin on 1 August.

The European Commission has published Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1446 in the Official Journal of the European Union  (OJEU) on 14 July 2025.

The Regulation extends the suspension of additional customs duties under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/778 and previous measures outlined in Implementing Regulations (EU) 2018/886 and Implementing Regulation 2020/502 on certain US imports until 6 August 2025.

These tariffs were imposed initially in response to US safeguard duties on EU steel and aluminium under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act.  On 10 February 2025, the US imposed additional customs duties on steel and aluminum imports, including derivative products from the EU. These duties, set at 25% for steel and 10% for aluminium, will take effect on 12 March 2025 and remain in place indefinitely.

The suspension, initially adopted through earlier regulations, aligns with the US’s extension of its suspension of duties on EU imports. This measure aims to support ongoing negotiations and ease transatlantic trade tensions.

This suspension took effect on 15 July 2024, the day following its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union on 14 July 2024.
