The Australian Parliament Joint Select Committee on Social Media and Australian Society published its Second interim report on digital platforms and the traditional news media.

The report addresses several issues and offers specific recommendations, including suggestions for taxing social media platforms such as Meta (Facebook). This follows after the Albanese Government had failed to take any firm action to resolve the dispute with Meta under the News Media Bargaining Code, which was introduced by the former Coalition Government, which, according to some reports, has seen hundreds of millions of dollars paid to Australian media companies.

In addition, the Australian Greens recommend that the Australian Government explore implementing a digital services tax. This measure would ensure that global giants contribute fairly to the communities they profit from, following the example set by countries such as France and Canada.

The Australian Greens are a political party founded on four fundamental principles: ecological sustainability, grassroots democracy, social justice, and peace and non-violence.
