Romania’s government passed a memorandum to suspend the 1993 income and capital tax treaty with Russia on 14 August, 2024.
This decision follows after the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press release on 15 March 2023, declared to suspend the double tax agreements (DTAs) with 38 unfriendly countries that have introduced unilateral economic restrictions against Russia, which includes Romania, on August 8, 2023.
The list of other unfriendly countries includes Australia, Austria, Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Iceland, Spain, Canada, Cyprus, South Korea, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, North Macedonia, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, the United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, France, Japan, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Montenegro.
Romania’s suspension will officially take effect once the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formally notifies Russia.
