New Zealand published the Double Tax Agreements (Slovak Republic) Order 2024 on 29 July, 2024.
The order, which comes into force on 29 August 2024, gives effect to the agreement between New Zealand and the Slovak Republic for the elimination of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and the prevention of tax evasion and avoidance (the agreement) and a protocol to the agreement (the protocol).
Signed on 26 September, 2023, the tax treaty is the first between the two countries. It will take effect on the first day of the third month following the exchange of ratification instruments.
Withholding taxes will be applicable starting 1 January of the year after the treaty’s entry into force, while other taxes will be enforced in New Zealand from 1 April and in the Slovak Republic from 1 January of the year following its enforcement.
