Peru’s government announced that El Salvador and Peru will restart negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA) on 22 August 2024. This decision follows a meeting between officials from both nations in El Salvador.

Both countries aim to strengthen economic ties and explore new growth opportunities. Elizabeth Galdo, Peru’s Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism, announced that dialogue between the two nations will resume in September 2024 to outline a roadmap and schedule for the upcoming negotiations.

“Peru is committed to continuing to expand commercial opportunities for businesses. This progress with El Salvador to achieve a new FTA shows that our trade negotiation agenda remains active, and we continue to seek to position our products in international markets, particularly in Central America,” Galdo said.

The FTA between El Salvador and Peru is expected to create more opportunities for diversification. This diversification could help stabilise trade balances and foster more robust trade relationships between the two countries.
