Bulgaria published the law for the introduction of the euro in the Official Gazette, on 20 August 2024, paving the way for Bulgaria to shift away from using Lev, in line with EU regulations.
The purpose of the law is to supplement and facilitate the introduction of the euro and to increase transparency and awareness of the process of introducing the currency in the country in accordance with the directly applicable law of the European Union.
The law addresses various aspects, including the dual marking of prices for goods and services (Throughout this period, which is set to continue for one year, prices and monetary values will be presented in both lev and euro), the issuance and exchange of euro banknotes and coins, general currency conversion rules (which includes directives for rounding and transitional periods to facilitate the transition to the euro), accounting and tax document regulations, transitional provisions, etc.
