The US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) launched the 2017 tax filing season on 23 January 2017. Taxpayers have until April 18, 2017, to file their 2016 tax year returns and pay any taxes due. The deadline is later this year than the usual April 15, due to holidays. Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until October 16, 2017, to file.

IRS expects to receive more than 153m individual income tax returns. The IRS also expects more than 70 percent of taxpayers to get tax refunds this year. Last year, 111m refunds were issued, with an average refund of USD2,860.
