The Customs and Inland Revenue Department (DCIR) has published a statement on 26th May 2016 on its website announcing that there has been a number of abuses involving cruise ship passengers who purchase duty free goods to give in exchange for taxi and bus fares in Vanuatu. If these goods are intended for exportation and to be consumed outside Vanuatu, then they should only be considered as duty free. An offence occurs for the duty free goods those are not exported. Any person knowingly concerned may on conviction be liable to a fine of VUV 2,000,000. The DCIR are continuing to take over actions to prevent the duty free system being abused.
